TOP 10 PS4 FPS Games

10. Insurgency: Sandstorm

Insurgency slows down military combat to core moments of tension. You aren’t a Call of Duty super soldier running through open fire like a terminator. The pace is slow. Weapons are incredibly deadly and players don’t respawn until after their team completes an objective - meaning every shot fired can be the difference between victory and defeat. This places more reliance on patience, teamwork, and skill; creating a gameplay loop that feels both highly realistic and incredibly rewarding.

9. Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2

This game feels like the lovechild of the first-person shooter and puzzle genres. The gameplay focuses on using your stealth, scouting and adaptability to plan and execute the most deadly and accurate long-range attacks possible. Finally seeing your carefully laid plans pay off after figuring out the ideal path forward through trial and error never ceases to satisfy - but hey. If you get discovered, you can always shoot your way out.

8. Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 has a playful honesty - it’s a little bit mental, chaotic, a bit naughty. It takes all the strengths of old Borderlands games and dials them up to 11, improving on everything you’ve ever loved about them. It doesn’t feel as brave or original now that loot-based multiplayer games like Destiny 2 have caught up, but it’s the attitude that keeps it entertaining - and it has that in buckets.

7. Saints Row The Third: Remastered

It’s been a decade since Saints Row: The Third ripped up the rulebook of what a crime sandbox could and should be. Offering a much more over the top experience, it’s the digital manifestation of the phrase ‘balls to the wall’. Featuring all available DLC content, updated graphics and textures and the same delightfully silly gameplay, this is the best and most complete version of the game to date.

6. Battlefield 1

If there’s one thing that most modern FPS games seem to have, it’s some element of sci-fi and futurism. That’s probably why it’s so refreshing to play a game like Battlefield 1 - taking us all the way back to World War I through human-focused stories in single-player and wonderfully dynamic multiplayer modes. The destructible environments, the classes, the personality - they all come together to create a truly refreshing play.

5. Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 takes a familiar formula we’ve grown to love over the course of the Far Cry series and brings it into the next generation. The traditional Far Cry narrative theme of a guerilla fighter bringing down a tyrant is reborn brilliantly here, and strong cast performances make it easy to get lost in the world of the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. The incredible range of vehicles and weapons available to you while traversing it are the cherry on the cake.

4. Call of Duty: Vanguard

On the surface, Call of Duty: Vanguard is a first-person shooter set during World War II. But take a look under the hood, and it’s three distinct games in one - a blockbuster single-player campaign with incredible cinematic visuals and performances, a world-class multiplayer shooter with some of the best gameplay in the genre, and the infamous Zombies mode, which has evolved into a fantastic run-based format that leaves you coming back again and again. Unmissable!

3. Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War

Serving as a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, Cold War is an absolute triumph, and one of the best CoD games in years. From the campaign, through to the vast array of multiplayer modes, it’s a total blast for newcomers and seasoned veterans alike. And with the promise of free downloadable content coming soon, there’s every reason to jump back on the Call of Duty bandwagon.

2. Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 is often described with taglines that say something along the lines of ‘the best game you haven’t played’. Considering how truly fantastic this game is, it’s criminal how little fanfare it has received from the industry as a whole. The gameplay is fast-paced and exciting, and has giant robot mechs! What’s not to love? The single-player story is short but sweet, and the multiplayer experience is one of the best on the PS4 too.

1. Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal takes everything that made what came before so good, including the original 90s games, and builds upon it to make for the most refined, and in our opinion best game in the franchise to date. It balances mindless power fantasy with satisfying, rewarding gameplay in a way that no other game does, and we would urge anyone with even a passing interest in FPS games to give it a go.

TOP 10 PS4 Platformer Games

10. It Takes Two

One of this year’s biggest hits so far, in It Takes Two you and a partner play a married couple accidentally transformed into toys by their daughter. This sets up a novel platforming experience as you navigate their home, now full of surprisingly ordinary obstacles like vacuums, stairs, and the garden. Unfortunately, this game can’t be played single-player, but the multiplayer is available both local and online.

9. Sonic Colours Ultimate

Sonic Colors is back - updated, upgraded and made much more widely available across consoles. The original was released to celebrate 20 years of the Sonic franchise and was a return to the classic Sonic loop in many ways - stripping out a lot of extra characters and mechanics that bogged down the Sonic games before it, with great results. Sonic Colours is a fast-paced adventure that recaptures the magic that turned Sonic into a worldwide icon.

8. Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time manages to recapture the magic of playing the original trilogy for the first time. It strikes the perfect balance between timeless, nostalgic gameplay and enough new innovations to create something truly special. Plus it looks like a flipping Saturday morning cartoon! It’s not just a worthy entry in the series, but dare we say the best yet.

7. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy

Classic childhood remasters are truly a treat. You get to enjoy the nostalgia, and your kids love to play them for all the reasons you did. In this case, it’s because Spyro is awesome. It’s console platforming at it’s finest, and this remaster has improved every jump, every glide and every charge. Spyro: Reignited is, of course, also three platforming games in one. So cancel all your plans for the next few weekends.

6. Ratchet & Clank

It follows the storyline of the very first game, but Ratchet and Clank for PS4 is so far improved that it’s a totally different game. This remastering isn’t just graphical - it updates the original with all the best features of later games in the series. Expect the usual - silly jokes that wink and nod to all ages, tricky puzzle platforming and a large roster of insane weapons to clear levels with.

5. Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends isn’t a remake but is full of so much familiarity that you’ll still be awash with nostalgia while playing it. Simply one of the best platforming games available right now full stop, Rayman Legends will have you running, jumping and punching for days. The difficulty curve is so gradual that it’s perfect for hardcore platformers and casuals alike, and the art is so uniquely Rayman that every new level will become your favourite.

4. Little Nightmares II

Beware - Little Nightmares II turns the usually jovial platforming genre on its head with a horror-heavy, Tim-Burton-ish creepy aesthetic - part of what made the first game in this series such a hit. Playing as a boy named Mono, you’ll discover the dark secrets of Pale City. Packed with puzzle, stealth and classic platforming, those brave enough to play Little Nightmares II will find an excellent story and truly creepy visuals.

3. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, you control Faith Connors as she explores the open-world, futuristic city of Glass, which is beautiful in its simplicity. Almost unique among the fantastic platforming experiences on the PS4, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is played in a first-person view - but still manages to pull off freerunning and Parkour in a way that feels natural and rewarding. You can lose an hour just enjoying the flow of freerunning around the city!

2. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated

A complete remake of the original 2003 game, SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is a welcome return of a beloved franchise, and a worthy remake of the best Spongebob game ever made. THQ Nordic has done a great job in making some of the most vibrant, beautiful levels ever found in a platformer, and there’s enough variety to keep you from ever getting bored. It’s dripping with all the charm that made the show iconic, and that alone makes it worth playing for gamers of any age.

1. Hollow Knight

The critically-acclaimed Hollow Knight is tricky, spooky, and absolutely essential platforming. Set in the solemn world of Hallownest, you play as a little bug-like knight in Metroidvania style gameplay. Other bugs will try to kill you, and let me tell you - they will succeed many times. The interconnected maps are huge and don’t require you to fully explore them to succeed, meaning you build your own experience as you play.

TOP 10 PS4 Open World Games

10. Watch Dogs Legion

Taking the franchise to the gritty streets of a dystopian near-future London, you take on the role of the many members of the anti-establishment movement DeadSec. Yes, you can play as anyone and everyone, as you recruit people off the street to your cause - finally you can play as a Covent Garden human statue! With varied gameplay, including the series’ trademark hacking tools, you can truly play the game your way, whether that be stealthy or guns blazing.

9. Biomutant

As if playing a game as a customisable mutated kung-fu Disney animal wasn’t enough, Biomutant’s huge and gorgeous open-world combines the beauty of nature with a stark apocalypse. Trees stand as tall as skyscrapers next to decaying bridges and dams, with a hugely varied number of landscapes, from thick forests to radioactive wastelands. The land of Biomutant is an open world you’ll want to explore over and over again.

8. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

If you’re looking for a traditional Assassin’s Creed experience, then be warned that pure stealth is no longer a viable option. Odyssey introduces as much as it removes, and the new action RPG elements mean it’s still great fun to play, just different. Who can complain when you get to explore such a breathtakingly beautiful open world imagining of Ancient Greece? The hidden blade might be gone, but my god what beautiful views.

7. Mafia: Definitive Edition

The original Mafia came out nearly 20 years ago and helped to define the template for narrative-driven open-world titles. Set in the height of 1930s mob wars, you have to navigate a seedy criminal underworld in a gripping story that’ll stay with you long after you finish playing. And with completely rebuilt visuals, re-recorded audio and updated gameplay mechanics, it looks and feels as impressive as it did when it first released.

6. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon was the greatest surprise of 2017, and protagonist Aloy has already become a mascot for Playstation. Horizon is set in an open world where feral robots dominate a planet populated by a primitive society of humans, and this concept informs the worldbuilding in every way possible. From story and environment to costumes and weaponry, design breathes life into the world, and hunting down giant mechanical dinosaurs makes the experience all the sweeter.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Set in a huge and beautiful game world spilling with rich characters and story, The Witcher 3 will be talked about for years to come. The map is three and a half times bigger than Skyrim!  But be warned - gameplay is a lot more tactical than it seems. If you’re used to rushing in, you’ll find this game very difficult. There are also two huge DLCs that rival standalone games - making this an unmissable experience.

4. Spider-Man

Nobody expected that a franchise tie-in game would become one of the best gaming experiences on the PS4, but Spider-man surpassed all expectations. Not only is this open-world a near-perfect recreation of Manhattan, but the original storyline also has incredible highs and lows, cinematic action and tear-jerking moments. Exploring this reimagined Manhattan is an absolute treat - this is the web-slinging simulator you’ve always wanted. Until they perfect a VR version of course.

3. Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut

For those of you unfamiliar with Ghost of Tsushima - you play as Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and sole remaining member of his clan. To avenge them, he must toe the line between remaining true to his samurai principles, and using the guerilla tactics he learns throughout the game to secure a dishonourable advantage over opponents. Visually stunning, mechanically tight and with an incredible story, this game is packed with action from start to finish.

2. Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V)

Although technically part of the previous console generation, GTA 5 is still one of the best games on the PS4. The series has long been a shining example of open-world gameplay done right - GTA 5 is the apex of everything that came before it. It’s a near-perfect third-person shooter with a focus on gun combat and fast driving, mechanics which it absolutely nails. It’s also a GTA game, so you know. Expect adult themes.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 came to us after an incredibly long wait, but boy did that wait pay off. Coming to us from Rockstar, the same studio as GTA, on the surface it’s Grand Theft Auto with Cowboys. Perfection already. The open world of Red Dead Redemption is so beautiful, so realistic and so alive, that you’ll skip fast travelling altogether. Who needs it when riding a virtual horse looks this good?
