10. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
One of the best action-RPG games available on the PS4 right now. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey puts you in control of mercenary Alexios or Kassandra. Exploring the gorgeous, varied landscape of Ancient Greece, you set out on a mission to learn the secrets of your heritage. Odyssey is without a doubt the best-looking game in the Assassin’s Creed series yet, with about 40 hours of gameplay.
9. DOOM Eternal
Doom Eternal is one of those games that really benefits from the more powerful tech. With plenty of action taking place all at once, it helps to have the oomph of the Pro to keep the framerate buttery smooth. As for the game itself, it takes everything that made what came before so good, including the original 90s games, and builds upon it to make for the most refined, and in our opinion best game in the franchise to date. It balances mindless power fantasy with satisfying, rewarding gameplay in a way that no other game does, and we would urge anyone with even a passing interest in FPS games to give it a go.
8. Horizon Zero Dawn
I’ve referred to Horizon: Zero Dawn as probably my best surprise of this generation, and seeing it in the full glory of 4K on the PS4 Pro made that surprise all the sweeter. It’s set in a world where feral robots dominate a planet populated by a primitive society of humans. Everything from costuming to level design to storytelling is informed by this past-meets-future aesthetic. Combat, story, visual beauty - this game has everything.
7. The Last of Us Part 2
The Last of Us is a game that needs no introduction. Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic action-adventure title wowed both fans and critics with its compelling characters and nuanced storytelling. Set 7 years after its predecessor, The Last of Us Part 2 picks up Joel and Ellie’s story. With one of the most shocking stories ever told in gaming, more of the same competent gameplay and the best-looking visuals from this console generation, The Last of Us Part 2 is a piece of art that everyone should experience.
6. Red Dead Redemption 2
This long, long-awaited sequel to Red Dead Redemption is one of the most beautiful games on the standard PS4, and this translates incredibly to the capabilities of the PS4 Pro. If you can tear yourself out of Photo Mode long enough, you’ve got a good 70 hours of story gameplay to enjoy without even counting the online mode or the side missions. A shining example of the heights that modern game production has reached.
5. Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
For those of you unfamiliar with Ghost of Tsushima - you play as Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and sole remaining member of his clan. To avenge them, he must toe the line between remaining true to his samurai principles, and using the guerilla tactics he learns throughout the game to secure a dishonourable advantage over opponents. Visually stunning, mechanically tight and with an incredible story, this game is packed with action from start to finish.
4. Spider-Man
Who’d have thunk that a superhero tie-in game would be one of the best games of this generation? Spider-man seems to do the impossible - open world yet direct, packed with mechanics yet smooth and playable. This game is even more stunning on the PS4 Pro, and considering how much fun the web-slinging was, now it feels almost like a real tour of New York. If you haven’t played this game yet, you’re truly missing out.
3. God of War
2018’s God of War has already gone down as one of the best games of all time, and the PS4 Pro does this game amazing justice. In a game where the visual design was already so well crafted, the options of resolution and framerate that are accessible with the PS4 Pro make an already masterfully written story into something completely unmissable. This isn’t God of War as you might have known it in the past.
2. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Yet another game that was already shockingly beautiful in its own right, Hellblade blends hack and slash, puzzling and horror gameplay into a fantastic Norse/Celtic inspired story. You play Senua, a warrior who must descend into hell to rescue the soul of her dead lover. The game’s portrayal of Senua’s mental state is unmatched in modern gaming, and we can’t wait for the upcoming sequel.
1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Thanks to a resurgence in interest caused by the Netflix TV show, the Witcher series has gained a lot of popularity lately, and it’s completely deserved. Witcher 3 is trickier than it looks - the combat takes time and patience to get used to, which can be challenging if you’re used to a Skyrim-Esque ‘dive in and get slashing’ style of play. The beauty of this truly enormous game world is elevated further by the 4K resolution and HDR compatibility.
