Top 10 PS3 FPS Games

10. Crysis 3

Boasting stunning environmental detail, amazing lighting and mind-blowing effects, Crysis 3 is without a doubt the most visually stunning title on the PlayStation 3. Thanks to the CryEngine 3, Crysis 3 achieved benchmark-setting graphics with near-photorealism and the game’s staggering level of detail is just as incredible today as it was 2013. This game pushed the PlayStation 3 to its absolute limit and it still looks unbelievable today.

9. Rainbow Six Vegas 2

As any Rainbow Six player will tell you, this is not a franchise for run-and-gunners or spray-and-prayers. Rainbow Six demands patience and slow, tactical play – something that is proved by the incredible Rainbow Six Vegas 2. This masterpiece of tension includes a stunning campaign and an arcade ‘Terrorist Hunt’ mode that can be customised to your liking. Endlessly replayable, Vegas 2 is a blast.

8. Far Cry 3

After a slow and dreary Far Cry 2, this threequel returned to the franchise’s roots with a bang. Taking place in a savage tropical island, players must slash, sneak, detonate and shoot their way through this unforgiving paradise and take down the vicious antagonist Vaas. Richly detailed and packed with content, this vastly explorable open world is a stunning playground for chaos. Far Cry’s finest hour, no contest.

7. Borderlands 2

The charmingly over-the-top Borderlands 2 is packed with sassy characters, hilarious humour, amazing stories and ludicrous action – all conspiring to make one of the most preposterously fun titles on the console. With the distinct blending of action shooter and RPG, Borderlands 2 is a delightfully innovative game that also boasts a solid co-operative function that allows players to share the carnage with a buddy. It doesn’t get much more fun than this.

6. Bioshock Infinite

Taking the game’s signature gameplay way above the depths of the city of Rapture, Bioshock Infinite allows players to soar above the clouds in a beautiful flying city of Columbia, packed with intrigue and secrets. Boasting truly innovative gameplay and breathing fresh air into the beloved series, Infinite is a game that truly feels like an adventure. And if you’re looking for a challenge, playing the game through on the hardest difficulty is an endlessly rewarding feat.

5. Killzone 2

Marketing itself as a WWII game set in outer space, this gritty and thrilling shooter packs state-of-the-art visuals and explosive action into a game that could easily rival Halo as one of the most exciting sci-fi shooters of its generation. Overflowing with dark, intense atmosphere, Killzone 2 is a game that sucks you into its highly destructible world and doesn’t spit you out until the intense herd combat of the final showdown.

4. Resistance 3

This thrilling journey across a devastated America allows players to lock n’ load with a staggering arsenal of innovative weapons, with a weapon upgrade system allowing you to take that destruction to the next level. With remarkably intelligent AI and thrilling combat, Resistance 3 is a brilliant shooter that balances action and horror into a diverse, exciting game that stands up as one of the finest of its genre on the PlayStation 3.

3. Fallout 3

While the enormous post-apocalyptic Fallout 3 offers first-person as an option (and can be played in third person too), I am including it on this list because it handles so well as an FPS adventure. This richly detailed game is one of modern gaming’s finest RPGs and still looks, sounds and plays wonderfully. There are few things more rewarding than loading up your Rock-It Launcher with the various junk you’ve found across the wasteland and blasting mutants to smithereens.

2. The Orange Box

This packed bundle earns a place on this list just for containing Half-Life 2, let alone the other content included. The thrilling FPS adventure holds up even now as one of my favourite shooters ever made, and looks and plays remarkably on the PS3 console. Half-Life 2 is just a phenomenal title in every regard. But The Orange Box doesn’t stop there. With Team Fortress 2 and Portal also included, this very generous offering is rammed with content and is worth the price of admission for Gordon Freeman’s iconic second adventure alone.

1. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

After a rather underwhelming third outing, nobody expected much from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. They certainly didn’t expect a historic game-changer that would shape every other FPS that came after it. This iconic and beloved title boasts an engaging and intense campaign and featured the best online multiplayer on the PlayStation 3. This masterpiece of modern gaming still holds up today as one of the most exciting shooters available on home consoles.
