Top 10 PS4 Long Playtime Games

10. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

If you’re looking for a traditional stealthy Assassin’s Creed experience, then be warned that pure stealth is no longer a viable option - but Odyssey’s improvements on the action RPG elements introduced in Origins have created a breathtaking reimagining of Ancient Greece that was clearly produced with endless research and passion. The game is huge in scope - with an enormous open-world map, over 40 hours of engrossing story and that again in downloadable content.

9. Red Dead Redemption 2

You’ll struggle to find games with a more beautiful and authentically populated open-world than Red Dead Redemption 2. The main story alone takes around 50 hours to complete and is a fantastic tale told well through a rich cast of characters. That’s to say nothing of all the temping side missions and world-building. Spilling with content, you’ll spend hours of your time just running errands, bonding with your horse and fishing with your in-game pals.

8. Grand Theft Auto V

Home to one of the largest and most densely populated open worlds out there, GTA 5 is still one of the best games on the PS4. It’s a near-perfect third-person shooter with a focus on gun combat and fast driving, mechanics which it absolutely nails. Switching between three separate characters throughout the 50-hour story keeps things fresh, and thanks to side missions and online multiplayer, many easily rack up hundreds of hours of playtime.

7. Wasteland 3

The series that inspired Fallout is back with a brand new offering. It offers a deep, old school roleplaying experience coupled with turn-based tactical combat, and enough modern updates to keep it feeling fresh and vital. There’s so much choice and variation that it warrants plenty of replays. There’s so much of this game to discover; in fact, the developers claim that certain choices will mean you miss thousands of lines of dialogue!

6. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Set in a huge and beautiful game world spilling with rich characters, The Witcher 3 will be talked about for years to come. An extensive and gripping story means that its 50-hour story feels gone in a flash - but luckily the game doubles in size thanks to the expansion packs. It’s a masterpiece of game design. But be warned - combat is a lot more tactical than it seems. If you’re used to rushing in, you’ll find this game very difficult.

5. Bloodborne

Bloodborne is a game that pushes you to the very limit. The great difficulty of the gameplay means that you’ll be dying hundreds of times in any one playthrough - and this densely-packed game means a playthrough might take over 50 hours. Yet the payoffs of victory are ecstasy by comparison - when you’ve conquered Bloodborne, you won’t remember the pain. You’ll remember all of the well-earned successes and how good they felt when you achieved them.

4. Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

There’s a strong argument to be made that 2012’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is one of the most underrated games of the modern era. Fortunately, it’s been given a second lease on life with Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. Offering a vibrant, massive open world, charming inhabitants and a nice variety of quests, you can easily sink more than 100 hours into it. It’s a wonder why it didn’t spawn a multi-game franchise like it was intended to do. Perhaps the second time’s the charm.

3. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition is one of the most engrossing RPG experiences on the Playstation and blends together a strong story with timeless character-building mechanics. Thanks to an epic main story and densely packed downloadable content, you can spend nearly a hundred hours in this world and still have plenty to do. Come for the traditional medieval fantasy aesthetic, stay for the engrossing gameplay and settlement management.

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition

Yet another open-ended Bethesda title for the list! This masterpiece of action roleplaying is so well known that it’s meme-worthy, which also comes with the unfortunate side-effect of watering down how truly well made this game is. With so much rich choice and variety available, you may not spend all your playtime on one character - but you can easily spend over a hundred hours on just the base game, to say nothing of the additional expansions.

1. Persona 5

As if the gameplay wasn’t enough, what sets Persona 5 apart from the crowd is the innovative design - everything from the menu screens to the gameplay visuals ooze style. The loveable turn-based combat is designed to really draw you into the grand story - a  standard playthrough is averaged at around 100 hours and a completionist might spend nearly 200. This game is truly unique, in ways that you’ll love the second you pick it up.

TOP 10 PS4 Open World Games

10. Watch Dogs Legion

Taking the franchise to the gritty streets of a dystopian near-future London, you take on the role of the many members of the anti-establishment movement DeadSec. Yes, you can play as anyone and everyone, as you recruit people off the street to your cause - finally you can play as a Covent Garden human statue! With varied gameplay, including the series’ trademark hacking tools, you can truly play the game your way, whether that be stealthy or guns blazing.

9. Biomutant

As if playing a game as a customisable mutated kung-fu Disney animal wasn’t enough, Biomutant’s huge and gorgeous open-world combines the beauty of nature with a stark apocalypse. Trees stand as tall as skyscrapers next to decaying bridges and dams, with a hugely varied number of landscapes, from thick forests to radioactive wastelands. The land of Biomutant is an open world you’ll want to explore over and over again.

8. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

If you’re looking for a traditional Assassin’s Creed experience, then be warned that pure stealth is no longer a viable option. Odyssey introduces as much as it removes, and the new action RPG elements mean it’s still great fun to play, just different. Who can complain when you get to explore such a breathtakingly beautiful open world imagining of Ancient Greece? The hidden blade might be gone, but my god what beautiful views.

7. Mafia: Definitive Edition

The original Mafia came out nearly 20 years ago and helped to define the template for narrative-driven open-world titles. Set in the height of 1930s mob wars, you have to navigate a seedy criminal underworld in a gripping story that’ll stay with you long after you finish playing. And with completely rebuilt visuals, re-recorded audio and updated gameplay mechanics, it looks and feels as impressive as it did when it first released.

6. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon was the greatest surprise of 2017, and protagonist Aloy has already become a mascot for Playstation. Horizon is set in an open world where feral robots dominate a planet populated by a primitive society of humans, and this concept informs the worldbuilding in every way possible. From story and environment to costumes and weaponry, design breathes life into the world, and hunting down giant mechanical dinosaurs makes the experience all the sweeter.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Set in a huge and beautiful game world spilling with rich characters and story, The Witcher 3 will be talked about for years to come. The map is three and a half times bigger than Skyrim!  But be warned - gameplay is a lot more tactical than it seems. If you’re used to rushing in, you’ll find this game very difficult. There are also two huge DLCs that rival standalone games - making this an unmissable experience.

4. Spider-Man

Nobody expected that a franchise tie-in game would become one of the best gaming experiences on the PS4, but Spider-man surpassed all expectations. Not only is this open-world a near-perfect recreation of Manhattan, but the original storyline also has incredible highs and lows, cinematic action and tear-jerking moments. Exploring this reimagined Manhattan is an absolute treat - this is the web-slinging simulator you’ve always wanted. Until they perfect a VR version of course.

3. Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut

For those of you unfamiliar with Ghost of Tsushima - you play as Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and sole remaining member of his clan. To avenge them, he must toe the line between remaining true to his samurai principles, and using the guerilla tactics he learns throughout the game to secure a dishonourable advantage over opponents. Visually stunning, mechanically tight and with an incredible story, this game is packed with action from start to finish.

2. Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V)

Although technically part of the previous console generation, GTA 5 is still one of the best games on the PS4. The series has long been a shining example of open-world gameplay done right - GTA 5 is the apex of everything that came before it. It’s a near-perfect third-person shooter with a focus on gun combat and fast driving, mechanics which it absolutely nails. It’s also a GTA game, so you know. Expect adult themes.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 came to us after an incredibly long wait, but boy did that wait pay off. Coming to us from Rockstar, the same studio as GTA, on the surface it’s Grand Theft Auto with Cowboys. Perfection already. The open world of Red Dead Redemption is so beautiful, so realistic and so alive, that you’ll skip fast travelling altogether. Who needs it when riding a virtual horse looks this good?

TOP 10 PS4 RPG Games

10. Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus puts you in the shoes of a psychokinetic soldier in a near-future alternate reality where substances from brains give people extrasensory superpowers. Stay with me. The fun of the combat can’t be overstated. Your main attacks are melee, but with psychokinesis, you can hurl objects and debris at enemies from around you. You can even collect more psychokinetic powers from friends as you progress through the story - which has some great performances.

9. NIOH 2

Will a difficulty approaching Soulsborne territory, NIOH 2 isn’t a game for the fainthearted. But for those up to the challenge, you’ll find a beautiful game set in the times of the samurai. With some of the deepest combat systems we’ve ever come across, there’s definitely a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it’s all the more satisfying for it.

8. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim might not have garnered the headlines compared to other games released this year, but we’d consider it one of the most essential plays of recent memory. A tale of 13 teenagers who get swept up in a war between mechs and kaiju, it features time travel, multiple dimensions and other twists, all the while never feeling overwhelming. It combines accessible gameplay with an outstanding narrative and art style, and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call playing it a transformative experience. If you own a PS4, you need to play this game.

7. Final Fantasy 7 Remake

A total ground-up reimagining of one of the most iconic Final Fantasy instalments of all time, FF7R puts you back in control of Cloud Strife as he and his allies fight the Shinra Corporation in the city of Midgar. The game completely overhauls combat, visuals and story to offer something that will please fans of the original, and offer a completely new experience that will please newcomers and long-term fans alike.

6. Kingdom Hearts 3

A long time coming for fans of the series, Kingdom Hearts 3 is proof that you don’t always need to be able to follow the story to enjoy a game. Infamously convoluted, the Kingdom Hearts storyline has great payoff if you invest in it, but can easily take a backseat to the pure fun and nostalgia offered by an RPG game that takes a tour through your favourite Disney movies.

5. God of War

This 2018 revamp of the classic series should technically be the sequel to 2010’s God Of War III, but the tone is so different you can’t blame them for naming it for a different generation. Gone are the orgies in exchange for Fatherhood. You’ll still find gore, but it’s no longer indulgent. This perfectly woven story is told through almost faultless gameplay and creates one of the best games available right now - full stop.

4. Mass Effect Legendary Edition

The best value for money game on this list is Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which is three legendary sci-fi action RPG games bundled into one. Mass Effect is one of the most critically acclaimed video game franchises ever. But if you needed another reason to buy, Legendary Edition soups up the series with better load times, 4K graphics, and over 40 DLCs from across Mass Effect’s lifetime. An absolute steal.

3. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon was the greatest surprise of 2017, and protagonist Aloy has already become a mascot for Playstation. Horizon is set in a world where feral robots dominate a planet populated by a primitive society of humans, and this concept informs the worldbuilding in every way possible. From story and environment to costumes and weaponry, design breathes life into the world, and hunting down giant mechanical dinosaurs makes the experience all the sweeter.

2. Persona 5

As if the gameplay wasn’t enough, what sets Persona 5 apart from the crowd is the innovative design - everything from the menu screens to the gameplay visuals ooze style. The gameplay is traditional, loveable turn-based combat with some overworld puzzles thrown in. If you’re a completionist, there are over 100 hours of gameplay to enjoy. The grand story, loveable characters and visual style create a game that is truly unique in its genre.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Set in a huge and beautiful game world, spilling with rich characters and story, The Witcher 3 will be talked about for years to come. It’s a masterpiece of game design. But be warned - combat is a lot more tactical than it seems. If you’re used to rushing in, you’ll find this game very difficult. There are also two huge DLCs that rival standalone games - making this an unmissable experience.
