Top 10 PS4 All-Time Best Games

10. Mass Effect Legendary Edition

The Mass Effect series is one of the most critically acclaimed video game franchises in modern memory, and they’re all brought together under one roof in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. With souped-up 4K graphics and over 40 DLCs included from the original games, this isn’t just an essential piece of gaming history you’ll spend dozens of hours in - but an absolute bargain to boot.

9. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Trying to describe the pleasure of playing a game like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is difficult to do without sounding like a masochist. The combat is gruelling. But the reward for persevering and improving is a rich tapestry of story, visuals and sound. Nothing is more rewarding than finally hitting every parry, every dodge, and finally using your sword to strike down an enemy who has bested you a dozen times.

8. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

The conclusion of smart-mouthed treasure hunter Nathan Drake’s story (for now) was a fitting end for one of Sony’s biggest mascots. Spilling with clever puzzles, detailed level design and clearly an insane amount of historical research, this game is clearly filled with all of the heart of a passionate team. Don’t worry if you haven’t played any of the previous. It’s very accessible, even if you’ve never touched the series before.

7. Spider-man

Nobody expected that a franchise tie-in game would become one of the best gaming experiences on the PS4, but Spider-man surpassed all expectations. This iteration of Peter Parker is already a fan favourite. The original storyline has incredible highs and lows, cinematic action and tear-jerking moments. Packaged with tight combat mechanics and ridiculously fun web-slinging through a near-perfect recreation of New York City, there’s nothing not to like.

6. Days Gone

Days Gone had a second wave of popularity over lockdown when fans discovered that a sequel had not been picked up by Sony. The disappointment is understandable - Day’s Gone is one of the best survival sandbox experiences on the PS4. You play a gruff biker named Deacon, a survivor of a zombie apocalypse, as he motorcycles his way from camp to camp fighting hordes of literally hundreds of zombies - sorry, freakers - at a time.

5. Grand Theft Auto V

Although technically part of the previous console generation, GTA 5 is still one of the best games on the PS4. Switching between three separate characters throughout the story could have easily been mishandled, but it’s part of what makes the game so fantastic. It’s a near-perfect third-person shooter with a focus on gun combat and fast driving, mechanics which it absolutely nails. It’s also a GTA game, so you know. Expect adult themes.

4. Resident Evil Village

Village had big shoes to fill after its predecessor Resident Evil 7 reinvented the series to such universal acclaim - but it has no problem living up to expectation. With genuine scares, incredible visuals and some spooky humour on the side, Resident Evil Village brings back some action-adventure focus (a la RE4) that dropped out in RE7’s more survival-driven gameplay. Play it alone with the curtains drawn for the best possible experience!

3. The Last of Us Part 2

The Last of Us is a game that needs no introduction. Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic action-adventure title wowed both fans and critics with its compelling characters and nuanced storytelling. Set 7 years after its predecessor, The Last of Us Part 2 picks up Joel and Ellie’s story. With one of the most shocking stories ever told in gaming, more of the same competent gameplay and the best-looking visuals from this console generation, The Last of Us Part 2 is a piece of art that everyone should experience.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Set in a huge and beautiful game world spilling with rich characters and story, The Witcher 3 will be talked about for years to come. It’s a masterpiece of game design. But be warned - combat is a lot more tactical than it seems. If you’re used to rushing in, you’ll find this game very difficult. There are also two huge DLCs that rival standalone games - making this an unmissable experience.

1. God of War

This 2018 revamp of the classic series is technically the sequel to 2010’s God Of War III, but the tone is so different you can’t blame them for naming it to draw in a new generation. Orgies have been traded for fatherhood. You’ll still find gore, but it’s no longer indulgent. This perfectly woven story is told through almost faultless gameplay and creates one of the best games available right now - full stop.

PS4 Game Buyer's Guide

What is the best game on the PS4? Tough question. It’s an incredibly successful console and has been since its launch in 2013. Meaning it’s had plenty of time to build up an enormous library of games. The absolute best of the best will be a matter of personal opinion - but the top 10 in this article are universally acclaimed by gamers and critics alike, making them a great place to start.

10. Bloodborne

Bloodborne is a game that pushes you to the very limit. The combat is, without exaggeration, exhausting. The great difficulty of the gameplay means that you’ll be dying hundreds of times in any one playthrough, and yet the payoffs of victory are ecstasy by comparison. When you’ve played Bloodborne, you won’t remember the pain - you’ll remember all of the well-earned successes, and how good they felt when you achieved them.

9. Shadow of the Colossus (2018)

Shadow of the Colossus is a remake of a 2005 game that even at the time, was ambitious. It’s an action-adventure game, where the only goal is to defeat gargantuan enemies called Colossi. It’s refreshingly minimalistic; you’ve got nothing but a sword, a bow and a horse. The 16 Colossi are the only enemies in a largely empty world. It’s a beautiful modernisation of an absolute classic; a perfect gift for the ‘person who’s played everything’.

Packaged with tight combat mechanics and ridiculously fun web-slinging through a near-perfect recreation of New York City, there’s nothing not to like.

6. The Last of Us Remastered

The Last Of Us is one of those timeless games that will never not cut straight to your heart. The unforgettable story of Joel and Ellie in a world ravaged by a zombie apocalypse is told through engaging and strategic survival action gameplay, that starves out resources enough to mean that you’re always on edge in any confrontation. The game’s harder modes are especially punishing, but even more rewarding.

5. Red Dead Redemption II

Red Dead Redemption 2 came to us after an incredibly long wait, and boy did that wait pay off. At its simplest, it’s Grand Theft Auto with Cowboys (which is a perfect concept anyway) but goes so much further than that. You’ll struggle to find games with a more beautiful and authentically populated open world - it’s so engaging, that you’ll spend hours of your time just running errands and bonding with your horse.

Top 10 PS4 Fighting Games

10. Jump Force

Jump Force is in one word, a spectacle. For those not familiar with Shōnen Jump, they’re responsible for such famous series as Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Yu-gi-oh, and many more. In short, this game has a fantastic roster of characters from many of these series. Perfect for fighting game fans that also share an interest in anime with their friends, this is definitely one you’ll be inviting people over to play.

9. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite

Among the most famous fighting game series, Marvel vs Capcom has been a staple of the genre since 1994. This latest iteration has highs and lows, but it’ll be the highs that you remember it for - the fast-paced tag team battles, the innovative new Infinity Stone mechanics, the bright and attractive background visuals, and the 30-character roster from across the worlds of Marvel and Capcom.

8. Guilty Gear Strive

Don’t let the anime visual style fool you - Guilty Gear Strive is an incredible fighting game experience, a visual marvel and an underappreciated gem whatever your outlook on Japanese animation. It’s also the perfect place to pick up the series if you’ve overlooked it in the past, as the mechanics have been balanced to welcome beginners while maintaining the rewarding complexity and combos that long-term fans have come to love.

7. Dragon Ball FighterZ

Anyone who’s seen an episode of the Dragon Ball Z anime will know exactly why it lends itself so well to fighting games - the huge energy attacks, the over-the-top feats of strength, the transformations and the combos all make the perfect recipe for memorable fights. It also features an awesome original story, rather than rehashing the anime like other Dragon Ball games. Anime fan or not, this is without a doubt one of the best fighting games of this generation.

6. WWE 2K Battlegrounds

After the hot mess that was WWE 2K20, the developers have decided to offer a palette cleanser in the form of 2K Battlegrounds. A much more over the top affair, with arcade-style grappling, cartoony graphics and outlandish weapons, it’s a tonne of fun seeing these larger than life characters looking even larger than life. Plus you can throw your opponent into the mouth of a waiting crocodile - what more could you want?

5. EA Sports UFC 4

UFC 4 is definitely a case of evolution, rather than revolution. It adds some welcome features and tweaks some of the weaker areas of its predecessor, but broadly speaking, it’s more of the same. That’s not a bad thing, as a thriving online scene and narrative-driven career mode make it a tempting prospect. If you enjoy mixed martial arts and the previous entries in the series, you’re certain to enjoy this.

4. Street Fighter V

The most recent addition to the legendary Street Fighter series, Street Fighter V has a roster of 16 classic characters, with 4 being brand new to the series. While initially a sparse offering, updates since release have made it into the game it was always meant to be, with substantial new game modes and awesome new mechanics, like the V-trigger moves. A game that truly lives up to the reputation of the series.

3. Injustice 2

Injustice is a fighting game populated by all of your favourite DC comics characters, like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. What’s not to love? Coming to your PS4 from the makers of Mortal Kombat, Injustice 2 is not only a hugely technical and surprisingly deep fighting game but also has a fantastically engrossing single-player mode featuring a roster that is sure to make DC Comics fans drool.

2. Tekken 7

Tekken is without a doubt one of the most iconic fighting series in gaming, and Tekken 7 does a fantastic job of carrying the crown. The combat system is tight, responsive and you never feel cheated. The multiplayer is just as fantastic as you’d expected, but the Treasure Battle mode is where you’ll spend most of your single-player time - additional character cutscenes, cosmetic items and watchable Tekken history are all waiting for you to unlock.

1. Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat is the fighting series with the most infamous legacy. Well known for fast-paced fights and intense gore, Mortal Kombat has been alive and kicking for nearly 30 years. Mortal Kombat 11 is the pinnacle of everything the series has learned throughout its reign. Constant updates to the game since release have only improved it further, giving it the most refined combat experience in the series to date and a thriving competitive tournament scene. Fatality!
