Top 10 PSP Hidden Gems


10. Power Stone Collection


This bundle combines enhanced versions of Power Stone and Power Stone 2, which were originally released for the SEGA Dreamcast in 1999 and 2000 respectively. The crazy beat ‘em up action of the games translates well to the PSP thanks to a more sophisticated interface with new, more visual meters and radars that show the location of power stones. The games both play wonderfully and this collection is certainly one of the most underrated releases on the PSP.


9. Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite


One of the biggest games on the PSP, Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite boasts thousands of different armour sets and weapons to combine for victory on the battlefield. With over 500 hours of gameplay thanks to an endless wealth of missions, this stunning action game could be the only game you need. So, get tooled up and get a party together for a savage adventure – those monsters aren’t going to hunt themselves!


8. Dante's Inferno


Partially based on Dante’s classic The Divine Comedy, this epic adventure title takes players on a journey through the nine circles of hell. As you descend through limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery, you will do battle with a gauntlet of unimaginable evils and fight to recapture the soul of your beloved Beatrice. This stunningly realised depiction of hell is one of the most frightening in gaming and plays wonderfully to this day.


7. Megaman Maverick Hunter X


This Super Nintendo remake will be a delightful addition to any old-time fans collection, whilst packing enough new content to draw in new players. With redesigned level layouts and some great new visual and sound updates, Maverick Hunter X guarantees to still be a challenge even for the veteran gamer. This engrossing title is a perfect example of the right way to bring classic games into the modern world.

6. Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower


This remarkable and unique fighting game is an absolute essential for PSP gamers. This stunning translation of one of Capcom’s best fighting game franchises ports the Dreamcast title to the PSP with flawless execution. Flashy and fun, this fantastic beat ‘em up boasts wonderful character design, excellent visuals and traditional fighting gameplay – resulting in a true hidden gem that deserves a much stronger legacy.


5. Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast


Celebrated as the daddy of all arcade racers, SEGA’s OutRun series hit its absolute peak with the 2006 Coast 2 Coast release. With a new game engine and modern graphics, the game features the most cars ever seen in an OutRun game and is rammed with challenges and modes to test your mettle. This is a thrilling and nostalgic reminder of the good old days of the arcade and is a truly underrated modern classic.


4. Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force 2

Incredibly addictive and blurring the lines between many genres, this fantastic entry in the acclaimed Final Fantasy series takes players on a thrilling, emotional adventure that showed off the true power of the PSP. Graphically stunning and packed with incredible gameplay mechanics, Crisis Core is a masterpiece of the console and one of the finest entries in the staggering series of games. 10. Killzone Liberation


Killzone: Liberation is not only one of the most polished and graphically impressive titles on the PSP but could make a strong case for the finest entry in the acclaimed Killzone series. With a top-down isometric view that encourages thoughtful, tactical play, the game blurs the line between action shooter and strategy as you slowly and carefully execute your enemies with a huge assortment of tech and skills.


9. Little Big Planet


A game that truly needs no introduction, the beautifully charming Little Big Planet’s loveable Sackboy’s PSP outing is just as wonderful as his adventures on home consoles. With 23 main levels and 14 mini-levels, the game is packed with content! Pair that with the user-generated content and customisation creates endless opportunities for creativity. Titles like Little Big Planet remind us why we love gaming so much.


8. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories


This immersive prequel to Grand Theft Auto III puts players in the shoes of Toni Cipriani as he rises through the ranks of the Leone crime family in Liberty City. Pushing the PSP’s tech to its limit, the vast open world action of the series translates remarkably well to handheld and plays incredibly. Exploring the Liberty City of old is a nostalgic treat for gamers and the ability to do it on the PSP is a real treat.


7. LocoRoco 2


Japan Studio’s beautiful platform puzzler is one of the most innovative, simplistic and downright gorgeous games available on the PSP. As you control the planet of the game itself, tilting the world manoeuvres the LocoRoco as you roll, bump and squish your way through each level. This charming game may seem easy on the surface but takes a while to master, and there’s nothing more rewarding than a perfect run through a level.


6. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions


This deep and complex tactical title updates the original PlayStation’s title with new characters, jobs and mechanics. Totally unkind to beginners, this is a challenging game that rewards players’ patience and willingness to learn – and once you’ve got the hang of it and perfected your strategies on the battlefield, you’ll find it to be one of the most addictive titles on the PSP. A truly thrilling title that will frustrate and delight in equal measure.


5. TEKKEN: Dark Resurrection


With more than 30 customisable characters and a huge choice of game modes and stages, Tekken: Dark Resurrection allows players to do battle wherever they are thanks to the PSP. With the stunning visuals and visceral battles that fans of the series have come to know and love, Dark Resurrection runs at full 60 FPS during matches and looks truly beautiful in motion. A real treat for fans of the series.


4. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep


This surprisingly effective entry in the Kingdom Hearts series doesn’t let the smaller scale of the PSP’s abilities keep it from hitting the same ambitious highs the series is known for. Packed with fast and fluid enemy encounters thanks to an overhauled battle system and the usual innovative mix of Square Enix and Disney characters and worlds, this wonderful RPG prequel offers a stunning introduction to the acclaimed series.


3. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker


In this thrilling 1970s-set adventure, players control the iconic Snake through a staggering 30-hour campaign filled with stealth, mystery and intrigue. The game combines all the best bits of previous Metal Gear Solid titles into one definitive title that looks and plays beautifully and certainly could change anyone’s mind who thought the PSP couldn’t match the performance of home consoles when immersing gamers into richly detailed games. 


2. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars


With a different presentation to previous games in the series, Chinatown Wars presented a new Grand Theft Auto experience for players. With a traditional top-down perspective and comic book-like aesthetic thanks to cel-shading, the game looks beautiful – and plays pretty damn great too. Filled with the usual carnage one can expect from a GTA title, Chinatown Wars is a remarkable entry in the series that feels unique and fresh even today.


1. God of War: Ghost of Sparta


This slickly designed and incredibly executed entry in the God of War franchise showed what the PSP was capable of with an ancient world to explore full of challenging puzzles and thrilling combat. With huge bosses to defeat, hordes of enemies and polished combat systems, Ghost of Sparta is an essential entry in the acclaimed game series and without a doubt the PSP console’s finest hour. A masterpiece of handheld gaming.
